Amigos
My brother once told me "when you ride a motorcycle, you're never really alone". He was right. Riding solo seems to invite people to interact with me.
One of the most amazing things about my journey has been the overwhelming support I've received from ordinary people. Some are motorcyclists, others are not.
I never expected to encounter this kind of friendship throughout my journey with people I've never met, some from drastically different cultures. And even though sometimes communication was never truly clear, I always felt extremely welcome.
I'm fortunate to have met and shared time with all of these good people and businesses. It's the least I can do to acknowledge them here with a hearty "thank you". They now reside alongside the very best memories of my journey.
Note: Most recent support first.

|
| Tim is a good friend from the Black Gold Beemers motorcycle club in Edmonton who continued to stay in touch with me throughout the entire two years I was away. He regularly enlightened me on the virtues of travel, motorcycles, and events back home. If I ever needed an uplifting message I would talk to Tim. Thanks Tim for always being there, you are a great example of what retirement should look like and I'm fortunate to be able to call you my friend. |

| Also a good friend from the Black Gold Beemers motorcycle club, Bob recently retired back to his home in New Brunswick where he, his wife Veronica and their daughter Melissa gave me a family welcome into their lovely home. It was a real treat to have such wonderful home-made meals, change the oil in such a moto-friendly garage, sleep in such a comfy bed, and of course catch up with you a little too. I truly appreciate your kindness and friendship. |

It was fun spending time with the whole family including your daughter Christina and entertaining grandson Peyton. Thanks so very much guys for taking care of me and becoming my new good friends. |

| Lee and I met on a ride in the Canadian Rockies in 2004 and I knew he was a real rider because he'd just ridden up from Atlanta on his VFR - in like two days! Somehow he managed to find out about my trip and contacted me in time to stop by his home for a visit. Thank you for the room and board Lee, it was great seeing you again. I can definitely see why you love motos where you live, but does one man REALLY need fourteen motos? ;-) |

| Herb and Reno Anderson are friends from the Black Gold Beemers motorcycle club in Edmonton. They went far beyond the limits of most friends when they actually bought Buzz II for me while I was still in Bogota. Then when I arrived they opened up their home and business to me, and even allowed me to take over their garage while converting Buzz II into a real moto. I wouldn't have been able to finish my trip on two wheels without your help. Thank you for all that you did for me and more importantly, for all that you shared with me. |

| With my lack of body fat added to circulation problems in my hands and feet, electric heated clothing is a necessity. I knew owner Mike Coan from the Yamaha GTS list before I started my trip, but ended up using my old Gerbing stuff for the trip. When that was lost in the plane crash I decided it was a great opportunity to try Warm & Safe. Mike kindly supplied me with a jacket liner, gloves and dual heat controller for a great price and made sure that I got it right away. And even though I didn't end up going to Alaska yet, I've used it several times in Canada and it works like a charm. Thanks for all your support Mike. It's great dealing with a real rider. |

Suzuki Brazil

|
| My friend Javier at Suzuki Colombia put me in touch with Carlos Zolin (a service engineer at the Suzuki factory in Sao Paulo) when Buzz started experiencing problems with Brazilian gasoline. I never imagined that Carlos and Suzuki Brazil would be so incredibly helpful. They not only supplied, without cost, all the parts that Buzz needed while I was in Brazil (which thankfully wasn't many), they also express couriered a new radiator to Recife to replace my original one that was starting to show it's age at 138,880 kms. But even more important to me than all this was the feeling that he and Suzuki were there for me if I needed them when he said "Your motorcycle are on our care at Brazilian territory". Thank you very much Carlos and Suzuki Brazil, you guys are awesome! |

He simply loves all bikes, and as a veteran RTW rider himself he knows what this life can be like. He opened his shop to me as if it were my own, gave me the keys to another V-Strom to ride while I worked on Buzz and insisted I stay in his beautiful, spare, 11th floor apartment on the ocean front. It was a very welcomed break from the hotel lifestyle and somehow 10 days managed to slip by as I enjoyed the company of this generous and talented man. Thank you Tacio for sharing your life, motorcycling experiences, time and passion for motorcycles with me, it really helped recharge my motivation. |

| I contacted Manuel Vechina through Carlos from Suzuki Brazil about helping me with Buzz's dislike for Brazil's alcohol gasoline. Who'd have know I would end up meeting a retired track racer who started the 1st Suzuki dealership in Brazil when he was 17 after having just moved there from Portugal. I couldn't have met a nicer person. He had his mechanics completely go over Buzz to help resolve the fuel problem as soon as I pulled up to his store. And then, when I had the accident with the car he stepped forward without being asked and took care of communications with the police, hospital visit, car owner's insurance company, and as if that wasn't enough, he insisted on repairing Buzz completely without cost to me. It was like a friendly hand reaching into a nightmare and pulling me out. Thank you Vechina, I will never forget your generosity, and more importantly, fine example of helping a fellow man when he's down. |

He knows what I've sacrificed to make this trip happen and has always supported me with great enthusiasm. His offer was a genuine, no-strings attached gift to help out with trip expenses. As owners of most businesses will attest, he has far too little time for riding as much as he'd like, however, Can-west clients enjoy the benefit of his efforts, and because of this his business is flourishing. | Tiberio 'Tiby' Jaramillo is an extremely helpful and knowledgeable rider with many years experience. He's ridden the Americas thoroughly and knows some real hidden gems in Colombia to visit by bike. He kindly shared some of these great locations with me and I can vouch for their quality. He is currently starting a moto-touring business which I would highly recommend to anyone. Thanks Tiby!
Update: Sadly, Tiby passed away in the fall of 2008 due to a massive heart-attack. Tiby was a fine man who exemplified the friendship and helpfulness of a real motorcycle rider who knew what it was like to be on the road for long periods of time away from home. Colombia has lost a wonderful ambassador for their country, and the motorcycle community as well. RIP brother.

| Ramiro Salazar, Alexander Ospina and Guillermo Cortes serviced Buzz at the Suzuki dealership in Pereira, invited me into their homes for dinner, and even presented me small gifts. Thank you all very much for your kindness, support and friendship. |

Kozy Family
|
|
| Through an incredible stroke of luck I was introduced to this lovely family. Larry, Tannya and their beautiful children Domenica and Andres who shared their home and lives with me for 5 nights while I got both myself and Buzz settled into Colombia. Thank you for everything guys, you really made me feel at home. It was a real pleasure spending time with you and all the "guys".
Update: I also ended up staying with Larry and Tannya on my way back north through Colombia. It was great to see how Andres has grown and how Domenica continues to amaze me with her wide range of talents. I am so very fortunate to have had all your help and friendship.

Chanis Family
|
|
| In Panama I became a member of the Chanis family thanks to the incredible hospitality of Dr. Gilberto Chanis and his wife Rebecca. I was welcomed to 3 nights at their lovely country home in El Valle and then 6 more in their beautiful home in Panama City. They fed me, took me on tours and helped me with plans for flying over the Darien gap. Thank you all (Totin, Annamarie, both of your parents, and of course Daniel) so very much. Your generosity was overwhelming and I learned allot watching your love and family values in action. |

Darryl & Bernice and Stean & Niki Smith

|
| After 11 days with Darryl and Bernice I finally left, only to return for 5 more days with son Stean and his wife Niki. They brought down a few needed supplies from home with them, took good care of me while I was there, and then carried back a suitcase full of 'stuff' I'd acquired along the way or determined wasn't needed. Thank you all so very much, your help was invaluable. My plane wouldn't have been able to take off from Panama with all that 'stuff' you took home for me and it was really great spending time with you. |

| It would be a crying shame if you visited Mazatlan without at least having a fresh seafood lunch at Victor's. Besides being a great chef, Victor is an excellent conversationalist. Thanks for allowing me to camp on the beach next to your restaurant and use your facilities for 5 nights Victor. |

| Dave is another fellow GTS owner and accomplished long-distance rider who invited me to his lovely home in California back in 2003 at the National GTS Rally in Colorado. He and Sandy welcomed me into their lives for a couple of days and took good care of me. Thank you both, I really enjoyed getting to know you better. |

| Kevin is one of those people who steps up to the plate to help without even being asked. He's a fellow motorcycle enthusiast and GTS owner who also happens to work with Internet systems at his day job. He generously provided me storage space on his home server as well as some incredible assistance for my website. Kevin really saved the day for me when he offered to help as my departure date closed in on me. Anyone on the GTS forum will tell you that he's a great guy with a lighting-fast sense of humor. Thanks very much Kevin, I would probably still be looking for ways to get this site running if it weren't for your help! |
